To the cognoscenti, the Gunks, located in New Paltz, NY, are one of the
most extensive and popular rock climbing areas in the east. Featuring three
main cliffs with routes ranging from beginner to expert, they are the
northernmost few miles of a ridge that ultimately links with the
Appalachians. Composed of a conglomerate deposited in the Silurian period,
the rock is noted for its solid quality, horizontal holds, good cracks, and
overhangs.
